Concept
Our first form of visual perception is contrast, followed by movement, shape and form, and lastly color. I've been observing relationships with color from a psychological perspective to bring attention to the ways it may relate to our feelings and personalities. This new series of work is painted on hand stretched canvas, each in a different monochromatic palette. The scope of chromatic and achromatic pieces - 4 primaries and 4 auxiliaries - is intended to ignite definitive responses and challenge viewers to examine their own preferences for color. Reflecting on feelings of attraction, indifference or dislike around each piece, this work was created to invite and observe our personal picks around color while also considering the influence of subjective interpretations, response to forms and visual aesthetics of the work.
Each painting is focused on color-specific traits and designed to be an unstructured prompt. Accompanying each piece are associated traits and feelings, intended to be read after forming preferences. Designed for the purpose of a creative exercise, this artwork and research is referenced from color theory literature, personality tests and my own deep dives into color observation. This collection serves as an extension of my creative focus and core work the past 7 years, reconnecting with the inner child. These paintings offer an alternative perspective at perceiving color and examining our choices/rejections through a unique lens to connect back to ourselves. It also observes how the influence of color may strategically appeal to our feelings and behaviors.
